Warning signs: when gambling stops being entertainment
Answer honestly. Do you recognise any of these behaviours?
- Gambling with money meant for essential expenses (rent, bills, food)
- Needing to bet increasing amounts to feel the same excitement
- Returning to the casino to win back losses ("chasing losses")
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble or lose
- Borrowing money to gamble
- Feeling irritable or anxious when trying to cut down or stop
- Gambling affecting your work, studies or personal relationships
- Gambling to escape problems or relieve sadness and anxiety
A single "yes" already justifies talking to a professional. The more signs you recognise, the more important it is to seek help — the contacts below are free and confidential.
Self-exclusion: how it works
At land-based casinos — the request is made to the SRIJ through one of three channels:
1. In person, at the SRIJ offices located inside the casinos, or at the SRIJ headquarters in Lisbon;
2. By post, using the SRIJ's own form;
3. By e-mail, to info.srij@turismodeportugal.pt.
An identification document is required. The ban applies to the gaming rooms of every casino in Portugal — not only Solverde casinos — typically for 2 years, up to the legal maximum of 5 years.
Online gambling — self-exclusion (including from Solverde.pt) is requested directly on the SRIJ form at https://autoexclusaoonline.srij.turismodeportugal.pt/requerimento, taking effect across all licensed operators in Portugal. Minimum duration of 3 months; with no end date indicated, it remains in force indefinitely. Support: exclusao.online@turismodeportugal.pt.
Self-exclusion is not a punishment — it is a protection tool used by thousands of players. It can be the first step, alongside professional support.
Self-control tools at Solverde casinos
- Set a budget before you enter and stick to it — leave cards and withdrawals out of the evening's plan.
- Set a time limit and keep to it, with regular breaks.
- Never gamble under the influence of alcohol, medication that affects judgement, extreme tiredness or financial pressure.
